  • LPDstudios Blog: Whats New-Mothers Day Gifts

Look whats new for Mothers Day,  I would like to introduce The Forever Fused Two Hearts Pendant Necklace and Gently Curved Gold Bronze Heart Earrings.  When I started creating these new designs in the studio I had love in mind.  The necklace is two curved hearts fused together without any solder.  I can do this because I started off using bronze metal clay.  The two hearts where joined during the clay stage of the necklace.  During the kiln firing process, the clay is turned into solid gold bronze and is joined together,  just like our love for our children.  The pendant hangs from a beautiful 14/20 gold filled chain with a wheat pattern.  Our collection would not be complete without our Gently Curved Gold Bronze Heart Earrings.  What an amazing way to express your love this Mothers Day.

We always designing and creating something new at LPDstudios.

  • LPDstudios Blog: Behind the Scenes: Craft on Tap- Pearl and Leather Jewelry

I can't wait for my next Craft on Tap class which is being held on April 19, 2018 at the Lancaster Guild of Craftsmen.  I just love teaching at this facility because I am surrounded by amazing artwork, jewelry and pottery by incredible artist that are living and working in Pennsylvania.
The latest workshop is perfect for Springtime, who doesn't love a new piece of jewelry to kick off a season.   We are going to be creating a pair of Pearl and Leather Earrings and Bracelet.  This project is super easy and no skill level is required. One of the first tasks I had to do is prepare the pearls.  I needed to widen the drill holes to accept the leather cord.
    Drilling the Pearl Holes
Here I am drilling the pearls, I never thought pearls could be so dirty.

  • LPDstudios Blog: Behind the Scenes - Metal Clay and Leather Earrings

I'm busy in the studio, trying new things and venturing out of my norm. For my newest project, I decided to try a new form of metal clay called Art Clay. Art clay is very similar to the other metal clays I use, but only takes 30 minutes to fire versus the typical several hour time frame. Art clay is going to be a great material to use in future Craft on Tap classes, because of the quick fire time.

I recommend reading my previous post, Metal Clay, to get a full run down of how I work with metal clay, the tools I use, and the kiln firing process. Working with Art Clay is similar in that in comes in clay form, I can roll it out, cut any design or shape I want, and after firing, it will become a hard metal clay.

Here I am shaping the art clay for my earring designs.

She has merged her love of leather, metal and metal clay to create a unique collection of custom leather handbags, metal and leather jewelry and even pet collars. Now that the pieces are shaped, texture has been added, and the corners smoothed, they are ready to fire in my metal clay kiln. For art clay, there are a few extra steps in the kiln firing process. Before putting in the kiln I need to lay them on what is called Fiber Blanket, and when the pieces are removed from the kiln, I need to stick them in a cool water bath. Both steps help in removing the oxidized surface that happens to art clay in the firing process.

This is what the art clay looks like before the kiln firing:

As you can see, a dark outer shell occurs, and you have to dip the pieces in water in order for the outer shell to break away.

Once I've cleaned all of the outer shell off of each piece, I use liver of sulfur to darken the metal clay for a more signature, rustic LPDstudios look.

Next, I wanted to add a little something to each of my metal clay earrings, so I cut companion leather pieces that will layer onto the metal clay using hoop rings.

I added a little color to the leather using acrylic paint.

The leather I chose for this fantastical purse is lilac purple with an incredible metallic finish. When I found this hide I knew immediately I needed to create something out of the ordinary to fit the personality of this unique leather.

What better fit than the wings of the striking mythical creature Pegasus?! I love the way the wings spread across the entire width of the tote for an impactful statement. This purse is perfect for anyone looking for more fantasy, whimsy, and magic in their lives.
